Preparing for your school visit

Preparing for your school visit will ensure a more rewarding and enjoyable experience for students.

Booking your visit

Bookings are essential for all school groups. We recommend booking at least four weeks in advance. You can book your visit by selecting one of the education programs on our education page.

  • If you need to cancel or you are running late on the day, call 08 7089 5237.
  • Payment will be required upon invoice after your visit.
  • Cancellations or requests for rescheduling that are made within 5 school days of your booked visit date will incur a 50% fee.
  • We suggest coming to the museum before your excursion to develop a clear plan for your visit.

Support your students wellbeing

Our permanent exhibition includes content that some young people may find distressing. We want all students to be brought safely into this history, and safely out of it without traumatising them.

To help prepare your class for their visit, we suggest you:

  • In general terms, talk about the types of things they may see and hear at the museum
  • Let them know it is normal to feel upset or sad about what they are learning
  • Listen to their concerns
  • Encourage them to speak to a trusted adult before, during or after their visit
  • Provide them with information about your school counselling services.
  • Provide them with the following hotline information:
    Kids Helpline 1800 55 1800 | kidshelpline.com.au
    Lifeline 13 11 14 | lifeline.org.au
    headspace Adelaide 1800 063 267 | headspace.org.au

If you have concerns, please contact our Education Coordinator (education@ahmsec.org.au) to discuss when booking. We can work with our Museum Guides to deliver an age-appropriate tour of our permanent exhibition that also supports your teaching and learning objectives.

Museum Etiquette

Prepare your students by teaching them about museum etiquette:

  • Look closely at objects, photographs, and works of art
  • Ask questions
  • Respect objects and displays by not touching (unless it is interactive)
  • Be mindful of other visitors
  • Pencils only
  • Food and drink cannot be consumed inside the museum
  • Water bottles may only be used in our Education Centre
  • Bags are discouraged (as a small museum, our storage is limited)
